New Delhi: The Congress on Monday launched a broadside against the BJP terming its Rashtriya Ekta Yatra as “an exercise in political opportunism” even as the ruling party stressed the need to bring “alienated” people in Kashmir into political mainstream. “Ostensibly, the Tiranga Yatra of BJP is possibly the most naked manifestation of political opportunism. Srinagar is part of India. Jammu & Kashmir is an integral part of India. It is not Muzaffarabad (in Pakistan) where you have to hoist the flag. Then there is a question of alienation, which the government of India is trying to address. Why did this Tiranga yatra not come out when NDA was in power for six years? This is rank political opportunism. This use of the national symbol for political gains needs to be condemned. Are we only interested in territory or people also? If a section of people feel alienated, you need to take them into mainstream,” Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari told reporters. Referring to the land scam dogging Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, he said, “If at all this yatra has to be taken, it should be taken to Bangalore, which is also a state in India and where the rule of law does not prevail. How many BJP leaders and MPs have national flags on top of their houses? We don’t see national flags on top of the houses of the BJP’s top leadership,” said Tewari.
