Kolkata: The leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha and senior BJP leader, Sushma Swaraj has dropped a bombshell that the first prime minister of India Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru opposed the merger of Jammu and Kashmir with India. “The then Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel succeeded in the merger of over 600 princely states with India in a time-bound programme. However, the then premier Jawaharlal Nehru opposed the merger of princely state Jammu and Kashmir saying that he would deal the matter himself. Now the state was reeling under a separatist movement,” Swaraj said while addressing the party workers, who observed a sit-in demonstration, on the occasion of ‘Kashmir Bachao Diwas’ at Bhawani Chowk, Bhopal. She said the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government at Delhi is succumbing before the pressure of subversive forces and Pakistan, which is backing them and “the BJP vows to keep Kashmir as an integral part of India”. “Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India and BJP workers will give their last drop of blood to foil the attempt of those who want to separate Jammu and Kashmir from India,' added the BJP leader. Meanwhile, Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad told newsmen in Kolkatta that the Kashmir issue may not have an easy solution, but ‘there will be light at the end of the tunnel’. “The issue is not as simple as you think,” he said when asked what steps the Centre was taking to resolve the problems in that state. Noting that 62 people were killed since the outbreak of street protests in the Valley from June 11, the former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister said, 'This is unfortunate. I hope there will be light at the end of the tunnel.' Azad said all-party meetings had been held at the level of the state chief minister and the primeminister. 'A number of suggestions came up in those meetings. They are being implemented.'
