J&K Fake Encounter: Col, Major Among 11 Chargesheeted16 July 2010

Srinagar: The Jammu & Kashmir police have filed chargesheets against 11 people including an Army colonel and two majors in connection with the alleged fake encounter in which three young civilians were killed at Machil in Kupwara district in April this year. The chargesheet filed in the court of chief judicial magistrate at Sopore in Baramulla district named Colonel D K Pathania, Major Maurya, Major Upinder Kumar, apart from subedar Sadbeer Singh, hawaldar Bir Singh, sepoys, Chandra Bhan, Nagendra Singh and Narendra Singh, Territorial Army's Abbas Hussain Shah and two civilians Basharat Lone and Abdul Hamid Bhat. Three youth - Mohammad Shafi Lone, Shahzad Ahmad and Riyaz Ahmad - were killed in the alleged fake encounter by 4-Rajput personnel on the night of April 29-30 after being lured for jobs. The police had arrested Abbas Hussain Shah and the two civilians, Lone and Bhat. The three bodies were exhumed and a postmortem was conducted. The police had registered a missing report on April 27 in this regard, which was later converted into a kidnapping case. A police probe found that on directive of the major, the Territorial Army jawan, a former special police officer and an Army informer, lured the victims, residents of Nadihal in Sopore, to work as labourers for the Army for a monthly salary of Rs 2,000.
