Srinagar: Protests continued in parts of downtown here against the killing of teenager Tufail Ahmad Mattoo in police action last week while life returned to normal across the Valley after three days. Youth staged protests in isolated pockets of the old city including Rainawari, Saidakadal, Saraf Kadal, Kawdara, Safa Kadal and Sekidafar for the forth day running. The protests resulted in disruption of the vehicular traffic which had resumed after three days of shutdown and restrictions. The protesters engaged police and paramilitary CRPF forces as they fought ding-dong battles with them. The former hurled stones while later responded by using shells and canes. Elsewhere in the city, shops, businesses, banks, courts, and educational institutions opened after three days of protests, clashes and curfew-like restrictions. Authorities lifted the restrictions as police and CRPF deployment was withdrawn from most downtown localities. The public traffic also resumed this morning in the city. The Hurriyat (G) had said that no strike would be observed on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Tufail’s chaharum (fourth day of mourning) was observed today with prayers being offered at martyrs’ graveyard and friends, relatives and separatist leaders including Muhammad Yasin Malik, Nayeem Ahmad Khan and other visiting his Saidakadal residence. Earlier students of RP School, Mallah Bagh, where Tufail studied till 10th standard, visited his residence. Shouting slogans and demanding punishment to killers, they marched in the form of procession towards the residence. Students at Kashmir University offered a Gaibana Nimaz-e-Jinazah (funeral prayers in absentia) for Tufail and staged protests, demanding stern punishment to the policemen who fired the fatal shell on the teenager. “This is not the first such killing. Two boys have been killed in the same area in similar fashion,” a group of students said. “This seems to be a new trend with police to kill teenagers by firing tear gas shells fatally from point blank range. The killers should be awarded stern punishment,” they demanded. Students of MP Higher Secondary School, Baba Demb, and SP Higher Secondary School marched towards press colony and staged a demo. They demanded action against the policemen involved in the killing.
