Srinagar: People took to streets Friday in many parts of Kashmir and staged demonstrations to protest the Israeli aggression against besieged Palestinian population and raid on an aid convoy in Mediterranean sea that left tens of aid workers dead. The call for protests was given by Syed Ali Geelani led Hurriyat Conference. Geelani who had called for peaceful demonstrations after Friday prayers to protest the Israeli terrorism in Palestine. himself led a major protest march in Naushehra quarter of the city. “Palestinians are our brethren. We can’t act as mute spectators on the atrocities being committed by Zionists on them,” Geelani said in his address to protestors. . Hundreds of people joined protests elsewhere in Srinagar and other parts of the valley, reports said. At Naushehra Geelani emerged at the head of a several thousand strong procession after offering congregational Friday prayers at the shrine of Khwaja Habib-ullah Nowsheri. Chanting pro-freedom, pro-Palestine and anti-Israeli slogans, the protesters marched to the main square where the veteran leader addressed the gathering. Later paramilitary CRPF and riot police burst tear smoke shells to disperse the protestors who engaged the former in ding dong battles. Earlier, hundreds of people mainly youth took to streets in Kawdara, Rajouri Kadal and other areas of old city and staged anti-Israel demonstrations. Shouting pro-Palestine and anti-Israel slogans, the protesters pelted stones and bricks on the CRPF troops and police sparking off ding-dong battles. The clashes continued for several hours. Reports of anti-Israeli demonstrations have also come in from Baramulla, Sopore and Budgam towns of the valley.
