Srinagar: The Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah on Sunday condemned the killing of the president, Sopur Beopar Mandal, Ghulam Nabi Khan, describing it as a “barbaric act.” Omar said Khan was a popular businessman and a sincere human being. “He will be remembered for his great contribution in uniting various traders’ federations and maintaining harmony among various sections of the society,” he said. He said Khan’s killing was a cowardly act. “Those forces who are not happy with the peace and tranquility in the state have an ugly agenda to target the popular personalities like Khan,” Omar said. He said the strong condemnation by people over Khan’s killing indicated that “people wont’ remain mute spectators to such acts of violence.” He hoped that those who believe in human rights would unanimously condemn the killing. Omar prayed for peace to the departed soul and expressed sympathies with the bereaved. Meanwhile, several NC leaders visited Khan’s residence to express solidarity with the bereaved family. The minister for Rural Development Ali Muhammad Sagar, Speaker Legislative Assembly, Muhammad Akbar Lone, minister of state for Health Javid Ahmad Dar, minister of state for Housing, Nasir Aslam Wani, former MLA Handwara, Chowdhary Muhammad Ramzan, MLA Sopore Haji Muhammad Ashraf visited Khan’s residence “It is a handiwork of those elements who do not want peace and stability in the state and are out to kill innocent people,” Sagar said. He said that being the President of Traders Federation Sopur, Khan projected the cause of the trader’s fraternity. “Khan was a philanthropist who always advocated the cause of the poor and downtrodden,” Sagar said. MIRWAIZ CONDEMNS The Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (M), Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, termed Khan’s killing as a heinous crime. “We condemn the killing and express solidarity with the bereaved family,’ Mirwaiz said in a statement. PDP CONDEMNS The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) condemned Khan’s killing. “Such types of killings will further deteriorate situation in the Valley,” a PDP spokesman said in a statement.
