Sopur: Amid complete shutdown in this north Kashmir town for second consecutive day on Monday, the father of a local militant commander, Basharat Saleem, said that he had come to know about his son’s death but couldn’t find his body. The town is tense since Sunday afternoon after the news spread that Basharat Saleem has been reportedly killed in a gunfight with troops. Police is, however, neither confirming nor denying the commander’s death. Basharat’s father, Bashir Ahmed Sheikh told Greater Kashmir that the family came to know that he (Basharat) has been killed in Machil sector. “We first came to know that he has been killed in Kalaroos, but we couldn’t find his body there and we later came to know that he has been killed in Machil sector where we couldn’t reach. How unfortunate am I that I couldn’t shoulder the coffin of my son,” he said. According to Sheikh, Basharat started to teach computer basics to students at New Colony Sopur after pursuing Computer Engineering. “He was implicated in false cases in 2004 and kept behind bars for two years. He was continuously harassed during these years and due to constant harassment Basharat joined militant ranks in March 2009,” he said.
