Srinagar: Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) today said it cannot reinstate Syed Ali Shah Geelani, chairman Hurriyat Conference (G), into the party unless he clears his stand on a recent controversial book in which the author has allegedly resorted to character assassination of JeI leaders. Geelani at a press conference here yesterday had stated that he was ready to die for the cause of JeI and that character assassination of its leaders was unacceptable. However, the Hurriyat (G) chairman also viewed that the author has the freedom to write and everybody cannot subscribe to his views. Talking to Kashmir Times today, Ameer-i-Jamaat, Sheikh Mohammad Hassan said, 'There is confusion in the statement of Geelani. On one hand he says that Jamaat has a noble cause and is ready to die for it but on the other hand he defends the author stating that author has the freedom to write anything.” He added that JeI cannot consider his reinstatement until he makes his stand very clear about the content of the book Hassan.' “Supporting the cause of Jamaat-e-Islami is not enough to consider his reinstatement. His reinstatement will be considered only after hecompletely disassociates himself from the content of the book in which the author has maligned the image of Jamaat.’ He said that Jamaat also believes in freedom of expression but that does not mean the author can go for the character assassination of anybody. “If Geelani Sahab is really ready to die for the cause of Jamaat then instead of issuing confusing statements he should strongly condemn what the author has written,' said the chief of JeI. Geelani’s basic membership was suspended by Jamaat recently for his alleged deliberate silence over the controversial book 'Qaid-e-Inqilab-ek Tareekh ek Tahreek,' resorting to the character assassination of Jamaat-e-Islami. He has also been issued a show cause notice and asked to clarify his stand within two months. Jamaat also stated that Geelani may be permanently expelled from the party if he fails to reply to the show cause notice by or before the deadline.
