Army Captain Killed In J&K Gunbattle

Srinagar: Security forces killed four top Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists and lost an army captain in a 30-hour long encounter at Tral in south Kashmir's Pulwama district on Thursday. Captain Deepak Sharma is the second army captain to die in gunbattles with terrorists in the Valley in last eight days. Captain Devinder Singh Jass was earlier killed in an encounter at Sopore on February 23 along with two other soldiers, Naik Selva Kumar and Paratrooper Imtiyaz Ahmad Thokar of 1 PARA. Defence spokesperson Lt Col J S Brar said two jawans and a cop were injured in Tral encounter, which started on Wednesday after security forces, on a tip-off, raided a terrorist hideout in a densely populated village near Tral. 'Five Under Barrel Grenade Launchers were recovered from the encounter site.' Lt Col Brar said captain Sharma, from Rohtak in Haryana, was commissioned into the army's Corps of Signals in September 2006. The defence spokesperson identified three of the terrorists as Midha, Shabir and Khalid.
