JAMMU: In a major success, police and Rashtriya Rifles today gunned down two hardcore Hizbul Mujahideen militants including a divisional commander of the outfit in a day long fierce exchange of gun-battle at village Kalar in Kandi area of Rajouri district. An Army jawan was injured in the operation while a civilian, who had given shelter to the militants in his house, has managed to escape. Slain divisional commander of Hizbul Mujahideen was involved in a series of subversive activities across Rajouri, Poonch and Reasi districts for past 12 years. DIG Rajouri-Poonch range S D Singh said a joint team of police and 48 Rashtriya Rifles launched a search operation at Kalar last night after developing a specific information that three HM militants had been hiding in the area. Searches continued throughout the last night and finally the security personnel zeroed-in on a house owned by Muneer Kasana son of Feroz Din at village Kalar. Police parties led by SSP Rajouri Shafkat Wattali and DySP Operations Farooq Qaiser asked the militants to come out and surrender. However, the militants deserted the house and took shelter in a surrounding forest area. Army and police personnel chased the militants and finally a contact with them was established this afternoon, Mr Singh said, adding both the militants were eliminated after more than two hour long fierce exchange of gun-battle. An Army jawans of 48 RR identified as Santosh Kumar was injured while fighting bravely with the militants. He was immediately evacuated from the site of encounter and shifted to Military Hospital. The killed militants have been identified as Mohammad Aslam alias Jan Nissar son of Fazal Hussain, a resident of Kardyoon, Kandi Koteranka and Saddam Hussain alias Firdous alias Sikander son of Mohammad Sadiq Bakerwal R-o Dhanna, Draman, Budhal. Mr Wattali, who was leading police party in the operation, said Aslam was active in militancy for last 12 years having joined Hizbul Mujahideen at the age of 16 and was presently operating as divisional commander of the outfit. He was elevated as divisional commander of Hizbul Mujahideen by the outfit leadership after the killing of Adil in Kashmir few months back. Muneer Kasana son of Feroz Din, a resident of Kalar, in whose house the militants had taken shelter, managed to escape. Feroz Din happened to be ‘fuffa’ of Jan Nissar. While female members in the house maintained that only two militants had been hiding in the house, police said they had inputs about the presence of three militants in the area. Security forces continued searches in Kala forests to find out whether any ultra had slipped during the encounter. However, such a possibility was a remote, sources said. Recoveries made from the possession of slain militants include one AK-47 rifle, one carbine, a number of magazines, ammunition rounds, mobile phone with SIM cards, explosive devices and other belongings. Sources said Jan Nissar was involved in a number of killings and other militant activities for past 12 years. Last year, he had killed two informers of security forces, a couple and a BSF jawan, who had come to his house on leave. Saddam Hussain was studying in 10th standard when he was recruited into militancy by Hizbul Mujahideen early last year. Since then he had been working with Jan Nissar. Killing of Nissar has dealt a big blow to Hizbul Mujahideen outfit especially in Rajouri district, sources said. Few days back, Army and police had killed Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) chief Dawood and later his successor Parbhat Shikari in Mendhar tehsil of Poonch district. IGP Jammu Ashok Gupta has lauded the role of police and Army for killing top HM commander and his associate.
