Srinagar: Arrested BSF constable Lakhvinder Kumar has said that he was forced by his commandant to shoot at the Kashmiri boy, Zahid Farooq Sheikh (16), near the Dal Lake on February 5 after an altercation with the teenager. Lakhvinder was arrested and booked for murder on February 10 after the BSF named him, holding him responsible for the killing of the teenager that triggered a wave of protest throughout the Valley. Lakhvinder, in police custody on eight-day remand by chief judicial magistrate of Srinagar, told investigators that he was forced by his officer commandant, Ranveer Kumar Birdi, to soot the boy, a source said. But SSP, Srinagar, Javid Riyaz Bedar, who is heading the investigation, said constable Lakhvinder only named the personnel, including his commandant R K Birdi, who were with him at the time of the killing. ‘‘It’s Lakhvinder’s father who has accused his son’s superior, commandant Birdi, of forcing him to shoot the teenager,’’ SSP Bedar said.
