Avalanche Hits Army Again

Srinagar: A day after 17 army men were killed at Khilanmarg, another snow avalanche struck an army’s forward post at Tangdhar sector along Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara district, killing a trooper. 13 trapped army men were rescued. A defence spokesman, Lt Col J S Brar told Rising Kashmir that snow avalanche hit army’s Rika Post at Tangdhar on early Tuesday. “14 army men were stationed in the post and all of them were buried under snow.” He said a rescue operation was launched by army. “13 troopers were safely rescued while body of another, who had died in the avalanche, was recovered,” Brar said. Earlier on Monday, 17 troopers including an officer were killed and 17 others injured when an avalanche trapped a group of troopers undergoing high altitude warfare training at Army’s High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS) in Khilanmarg. Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE) had issued an avalanche warning last evening and asked the people living in high altitude areas not to venture in the area, which has been receiving heavy snowfall for the past four days. BSF man dies A police spokesman said due to heavy snowfall a deodar tree fell on a residential barrack of 26 Bn BSF Camp Nowgam in border district of Kupwara on Tuesday. “A trooper identified as Aslamdin was killed and two others injured in the incident. The injured troopers were hospitalized,” he said. The BSF barrack was partially damaged in the incident. He further said due to heavy rains, a civilian namely Ghulam Qadir Rather of Balkote Uri and an Army man of 5-5 GR were hit by shooting stones at Saidpora bridge Uri in Baramulla district. The injured were hospitalized.
