Srinagar: A counter Intelligence Kashmir (CIK) cop was shot dead by militants in north Kashmir’s Sopore town on Tuesday morning, the second such attack on police in the town in the past five days. Head Constable Mohammad Yousuf was fired upon from a close range outside the Sopore police station. “It was a target killing,” Superintendent of Police, Sopore, Altaf Khan said. “The head constable, who was in civvies, was shot dead from a close range with a pistol. He received two bullets.” The CIK is a special wing of the J&K Police and specifically deals with the collection of intelligence to counter the threat of anti-national activities in the state. The CIK office is located inside the premises of the Sopore police station and the slain Head Constable was just outside the police station when he was fired upon by a militant. Police sources said the personnel in the police station opened fire on the militant but he managed to escape as other militants, armed with assault rifles, gave him cover fire. Paramilitary forces cordoned the entire area to conduct searches but no one has been arrested yet. No militant outfit has so far claimed the responsibility for the killing. Last Friday, militants opened fire on a police party killing a Head Constable and a civilian.
