2 Militants Killed In Kulgam13 January 2010
Kulgam: Two militants were killed and three security personnel, including two troopers, were injured in a fierce gunbattle at Damhal Hanjipora in this south Kashmir district late Wednesday evening. The condition of the injured troopers was stated to be critical. “On specific information, a joint party of army’s 9 Rashtriya Rifles from Damhal Hajipora and 62 RR from Nihama camps and the special operations group of police laid siege to Tangmarg, Aharbal, some 11 km from Damhal Hanjipora tehsil at around 4 p.m.,” sources told Greater Kashmir. “The entire Pir Panjal range was sealed by the troopers. Later, they closed in on one of the houses of the village where five Hizbul-Mujahideen militants, including its Divisional Commander, Adil, are believed to be holed up. The militants opened fire on the troopers which was retaliated by them triggering an encounter,” sources said. Talking to Greater Kashmir, the superintendent of police, Keshav Ram Churasiya, said of the two militants believed to have been killed, the death of one was confirmed while two army men and an SOG man had been injured, two of them critically. He said the operation had been suspended for the night. Reinforcements have been called out for the operation. Sources said that a helicopter was pressed into service to airlift the injured troopers to the hospital. The identity of the slain militants was yet to be ascertained while the injured SOG man was identified as SPO Zahoor Ahmad.
