Srinagar: Former chief minister and Peoples Democratic Party Patron Mufti Muhammad Sayeed and a few top politicians of the state had a narrow escape Wednesday afternoon when their plane made an emergency landing at Srinagar International Airport due to technical breakdown, airport sources said. The sources said that besides Sayeed, Education Minister Peerzada Muhammad Sayeed, Member of Parliament Abdur Rashid Shaheen, CPI (M) State Secretary and MLA Muhammad Yousuf Tarigami and PDP MLA Syed Basharat Bukhari were also on the plane and had a narrow escape. The airport sources said that an Indian Airlines IC 821 plane which took off from Jammu Airport at 1:20 pm and made an emergency landing at the Srinagar International Airport. They said that the Instrument Landing System of the plane, a system of radio navigation which provides lateral and vertical guidance as well as other navigational parameters required by a pilot in a low approach or a landing, had developed a technical snag. “As a result the pilot did not land the plane for around 35 to 40 minutes and kept flying the plane over the Srinagar airport. However, after this the pilot displayed his skills and made an emergency landing,” the sources said. The plane was flown by Kapil Raina, a Kashmiri pilot, the sources said. “It was a dangerous situation. We landed in turbulence,” said a passenger who was onboard. A senior official at the Srinagar International Airport confirmed the incident.
