Jammu: With the battle of ballots in Jammu and Kashmir reaching its final phase, it has emerged that no political party has fielded candidates for all the 87 assembly constituencies in the state. 'No national, state or regional political party has fielded candidates for all the 87 assembly constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir in this election,' election department officials said. National Conference (NC), which has fielded 85 candidates, is the leading party and surprisingly Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), which is not a major player in the state, is a close second. The party has contested from 83 assembly seats, officials said. The third spot is shared by Congress and PDP, who have fielded candidates in 78 constituencies each, they said. National parties, comprising of BSP, BJP, BSP, CPM, CPI, Congress and NCP, have fielded 273 candidates in all. A total of 837 candidates have been fielded by 43 political parties which coupled with 517 independents takes the count of the total number of candidates contesting the polls in the state to 1354, they said.
