208 To Contest In Phase 5 Of J&K Polls

Srinagar: People’s Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti was among 103 candidates who filed their papers on the last day of nominations on Monday for the 11 seats spread over Pulwama, Shopian and Kathua districts. These districts are going to polls in the fifth phase of assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir on December 13. With this, the total number of candidates in these assembly segments has risen to 208. Besides sitting MP Mehbooba Mufti who filed her nomination from Wachi constituency in Shopian district, another prominent candidate who filed his papers today was senior Congress leader and sitting MP Lal Singh (Kathua), sources said. The highest number of candidates, 46, filed their papers from the four constituencies of Pulwama including Tral, Pampore, Pulwama and Rajpora, raising the total number of candidates in these constituencies to 82. Of these Tral segment accounted for the highest number of 25 candidates followed by Pulwama and Rajpura (20 each) and Pampore (17), the sources said. Thirty-six candidates filed their papers from the five constituencies of Kathua district - Billawar, Hiranagar, Kathua, Bani and Basohli - raising the number to 82, they said adding Kathua segment accounted for the highest 20 candidates followed by Billawar (17), Basohli (16), Hiranagar (15) and Bani (14). Sources said 21 candidates filed their papers from Shopian and Wachi segments on Monday. While 14 candidates submitted their papers in Shopian raising the number to 23, seven candidates filed their papers in Wachi raising the number to 21. The notification for the 11 seats going to the hustings on December 13, was issued on November 17. The scrutiny of the papers will be conducted on Tuesday, while November 27 has been set as the last date for withdrawal.
