Commander Among 4 Armymen Killed In J&K Encounter

Srinagar: An army colonel, three soldiers and four 'foreign' militants were killed in a fierce encounter in the Macchal sector of north Kashmir's Kupwara district on Friday.Col J J Jospeh, commanding officer of the 45 Rashtriya Rifles, the specialized counter-insurgency force in J&K, was killed while leading the operations against a big group of foreign militants. In the heavy exchange of fire, four militants and three soldiers were killed, while another officer was injured. 'The heavily-armed intruders were intercepted in the jungles and asked to surrender. But they started firing at the surrounding troops triggering the encounter,' said a defence spokesman.
