New Delhi: A gunbattle is on between five militants, who are holed up inside a house in Thana Mandi since Saturday, and the security forces.Times Now says Army Major Bhanu Pratap was killed in the encounter while two jawans of 43 Rashtriya Rifles were wounded. Two policemen were also wounded in the firing. On Saturday, in one of the deadliest attacks on security forces since India and Pakistan started a peace process in January 2004, at least 10 soldiers were killed and 14 injured when Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists triggered a landmine as an Army bus packed with soldiers passed over it at Narbal along the strategic Srinagar-Baramulla Highway. The heavily-guarded highway connects Srinagar-based 15 Corps with forward posts along the LoC in north Kashmir districts of Baramulla and Kupwara. The Hizbul Mujahideen claimed responsibility for the attack which comes amid a rising spiral of terrorist violence since the political flux set in after PDP pulled the plug on the Congress-led coalition government. Elections are scheduled after the Ramadan period which ends September 29 and terrorist groups have traditionally moved into a frenzy ahead of any voting.
