Police To Ensure Shifting Of People From Avalanche Prone Areas

Jammu: Police officials have been asked to ensure that people from avalanche-prone areas be shifted to safer places in Jammu division, sources said. Inspector General of Police, Jammu Zone, S P Vaid has instructed all station house officers (SHOs) and incharge of police posts to ensure that all the inhabitants of avalanche-prone zones be shifted to safer places in Jammu division. These steps were necessary in order to avoid any untoward incidents on account of possible avalanches-landslides, he said. Vaid also advised the inhabitants of higher reaches and heavily snow-bound areas to remain extra vigilant against possibility of snow avalanches-landslides in view of constant rains and snowfall. The residents of these areas are also requested to ensure clearance of snow from their roof tops regularly to avoid any damage, he said. Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police Kuldeep Khoda has announced a cash award of Rs 50,000 for the police team that rescued 39 snow-trapped people and recovered a body from the inaccessible snow bound area of Gulab Bagh in Qazigund yesterday.
