Traffic On Srinagar-Jammu Highway Suspended
2 February 2008
Srinagar: Traffic on Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the only surface link between the valley and the rest of the country, was suspended Sunday morning following landslides at Panthal and heavy accumulation of snow at Patnitop and Jawahar tunnel. The road link to the Kashmir valley was cut off from the rest of the country as it received fresh snowfall following intense cold wave conditions. Heavy snowfall at Patnitop and Jawahar tunnel, the gateway to Kashmir, compounded the problems prompting the authorities to suspend the traffic on the highway, a traffic department spokesman said. He said snowfall coupled with rains triggered landslides at Panthal blocking the arterial road, 140 kms from here.
