Militant Killed In Sopore Gunbattle

Srinagar: One-odd militant, who got trapped in a hideout at village Shiva in Sopore area, was killed in a fierce gunbattle with Police and security forces tonight. Informed sources in north Kashmir told EXCELSIOR that Sopore Police swooped on the hideout, behind the shop of one Ghulam Mohammad Rather, this evening after receiving information that one or two militants were present in village Shiva. As soon as the Police party zeroed in on the hideout, bursts of gunfire were fired from inside the hideout. Soon a reinforcement of Rashtriya Rifles 22 Bn and CRPF 179 Bn, which is part of SOG Sopore, joined the operation and directed heavy volume of fire on the hideout. Sources said that the structure was demolished with IEDs and the firing subsided late in the night. Dead body of one militant was found in the debris. He was believed to be a Pakistani cadre of Lashkar-e-Toiba. Sources said that two AK rifles and 14 grenades were recovered from the hideout. Police and troops were checking whether only one militant had died or a couple of his associated had also been killed. Officials said that the search operation would be resumed and concluded tomorrow. Reports from Shiva said that a number of senior officers, including DIG North Kashmir, Dr B Srinivas, SSP Baramulla Viplav Kumar, SP Sopore Imtiyaz Hussain Mir and Commanding Officer of RR 22 Bn were present on the spot and supervising the operation late tonight.
