Two Top LeT Ultras Eliminated In Doda

Jammu: Two Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants including a foreign mercenary were killed while five security personnel including a Major and a Sub Inspector were injured in a fierce day long gun battle at village Chinot in Bhadarwah tehsil of Doda district today. Official sources said a joint team of Rashtriya Rifles, police and CRPF launched a joint search operation at Chinot this morning after developing a specific information that a Lashkar 'section commander' Shamsher Khan alias Rezwan along with his associate had taken shelter in the village. The operation, supervised by DIG Doda range Farooq Khan and SSP Doda Manohar Singh, started at 10.30 am and a contact with the militants was established two hours later leading to an exchange of heavy gun-battle between the two sides. Official sources said the militants had advantage of firing from atop the hill where they had been hiding in a dhok since last evening. The operation ended at 4.30 pm with the killing of both the militants and injuries to five security personnel including Major Vipul Deswal, Sub Inspector Shiv Kumar Sharma and his body-guard Rajesh Kumar, a police constable. Two other injured security personnel were an Army jawan and a police constable identified as Johan Mohd. The SI and Rajesh Kumar have been airlifted to Government Medical College hospital here. Their condition was stated to be stable. Police party in the operation was led by SHO Bhadarwah Inspector Ajay Jamwal. Rezwan's associate, who was also killed in the encounter, include Aijaz alias Bhai alias Shamsher son of Ghulam Mohd Lone R-o Chinot. He too was a dreaded militant of Lashkar-e- Toiba outfit. Both slain militants were operating in Doda district for last more than three years and were involved in a series of subversive activities across the district. Security forces continued searches in the area anticipating presence of a couple of more militants, who might have been escorting Rezwan. Recoveries made from the scene of encounter include two AK rifles, three magazines, 17 rounds, one radio set, six hand grenades and a large quantity of incriminating documents. Meanwhile, three persons including a Hizbul Mujahideen militant were arrested by security forces in Kishtwar, Udhampur and Reasi districts today. On a tip off, troops of 10 Rashtriya Rifles raided a house in Kulshan area in Chatroo belt of Kishtwar district, sources said. They arrested Hizbul Mujahideen militant Gulzar Ahmed and recovered one grenade and some rounds from him. He was active in militancy since 2004. Troops also arrested two Over Ground Workers (OGWs) -Abu Hurena and Mohammad Lal in Jamlan- Mahore and Badani Nala in Reasi and Udhampur districts respectively. They were later handed over to police.
