3 Militants Killed, 6 Held In Valley

Srinagar: While Army today claimed to have killed three militants of a fresh infiltrating group, Police claimed to have arrested three militants and equal number of over-ground workers in north Kashmir. Meanwhile, a Naib Subedar of Army has died after slipping from a height in Tangdar and a local BSF porter got killed in cloudburst at Lashdat in Kupwara district. Defence sources told EXCELSIOR that expecting infiltration of a group of militants, troops of 9 JAK Rifles laid an ambush between Bhagat Post and Guatam Post in Machhil sector last evening. Troops opened fire when they spotted movement of five militants of a group who seemed to have infiltrated into the Valley from PoK. An encounter took place at a spot between Bhagat Post and Machhil Naar in which three militants got killed. Sources said that troops had extended the operation in search of two more militants of the group who had possibly escaped and managed to hide in bushes. Sources said that four AK-56 rifles and a pistol were recovered from the site of the encounter. In Kupwara district again, sources said that Naib Subedar Vijay Kumar of 104 Brigade died when he fell from a height and his head was smashed against hard rocks in Tangdar area, close to LoC. In another incident, a BSF porter, namely Manzoor Ahmed Moshra of Moori, got killed when lightning struck on him at Lashdat, close to LoC, in Kupwara district today. SSP Kupwara, Vijay Kumar, said that police conducted a raid over a specific information at Nutnusa, on Sopore-Kupwara road and arrested Hijbul Mujahideen's top wanted 'district commander' Irshad Ahmed Lone alias Khursheed alias Bilal R-o Longripora, Sopore, alongwith another militant, Tariq Ahmed Shah S-o Saifullah Shah R-o Dangiwacha, Baramulla. He said that Lone had been active as 'Battalion commander' and 'district commander' for last few years and Shah had returned from PoK in July this year. SSP Baramulla, Vijay Kumar, said that Sopore police today arrested a Lashkar-e- Toiba militant, Nisar Ahmed Dar alias Saajid, S-o Ghulam Mohiuddin Dar R-o Saadpora, Sopore, whose sustained interrogation later led to the arrest of three 'overground workers', namely Abdul Hameed Shah alias Hassan S-o Ghulam Ahmed Shah R-o Shallapora, Mushtaq Ahmed Changa alias Shahid S-o Ghulam Ahmed Changa R-o Hyder Colony Sopore and Muzaffar Ahmed Saboon alias Zubair S-o Ghulam Mustafa Saboob, Iqbal Nagar, Sopore. He said that 11 hand grenades and 9 UBGL grenades were recovered from the possession of the detained militant and his associates. Mr Kumar said that the detained miliant were involved in a number of subversive activities, including arson and murder, at many villages in Baramulla and Kupwara districts.
