Fidayeen Attempt Foiled, 3 Held In Srinagar

Srinagar: While Police in Srinagar claimed to have foiled a suicide attack with the arrest of three militants, students in Sopore clashed with Police over the controversial gunbattle in Handwara area in which a student had got killed alongwith a Pakistani militant earlier this week. SP SOG Srinagar said that Police arrested the militant trio of Lashkar-e-Toiba while it was planning to carry out a suicide attack on a Police or paramilitary target in the capital city. He said that all the three 'OGWs' were picked up in Karan Nagar locality where one of them had acquired a premises on rent. He identified the detainees as Mohammad Maqbool Mir alias Shaheen S-o Ghulam Mohi-ud- din Mir R-o Gamroo, Bandipore, Ishfaq Ahmad Fazili alias Khand Peer S-o Mohammad Tariq Fazili R-o Gamroo and Ishtiyaq Ahmad Rather alias Billa S-o Ghulam Rasool Rather R-o Bemina, Srinagar. He claimed that one AK rifle, six AK magazines, seven Chinese hand grenades and 200 rounds of AK ammunition were recovered from the detainees. The trio, he said, had been working for LeT militant outfit for quite some time but could not be apprehended so far and had transported weapons from Bandipore to Srinagar in a Tata Sumo. He said that after the delivery of the weapons, some fidayeen were supposed to be transported from Bandipore to Srinagar to carry out the attack in the capital city. For this purpose Ishtiaq alias Billa of Bemina had hired a room in Karan Nagar to keep the weapons and the fidayeen. All of the arrested OGWs were in constant touch with the Lashkar top Commander Abu Wafa alias Moosa and Salahuddin alias Haider Karar of Pakistan in Bandipore area. Handwara police, meanwhile, claimed to have arrested a rapist who lured a girl from Pulwama by promising her job and then exploited her sexually in Handwara. According to SP Handwara, Dr. Haseeb Mughal, Handwara Police received a complaint from one Shanu Akhter of Pulwama area that on September 10th, she was lured by one of her neighbourers, Ghulam Hassan Dar S-o Noor Mohammed Dar R-o Dangerpora, Kakpora (Pulwama) who happened to be an employee with Animal Husbandry Department, by promising her a Government job. The girl alleged that she alongwith her sister were taken to Handwara by the accused who made them stay for a night and then seduced her under compulsion, he added. He sated that in the morning, the girl managed to escape and lodged complaint with the Handwara Police on which a case FIR No: 205-2007, Under Section 420, 376 RPC, was registered and investigations were initiated. He said that during investigations, multiple raids were conducted by the Police and the accused was finally arrested in Langet. In sustained interrogation, he confessed his crime. He said that the accused has been put behind the bars and background of the accused was being ascertained. These efforts of Handwara Police in tracing out the accused within shortest time have been appreciated by the general public, social and religious organizations of the area as the matter had attracted widespread condemnation. Reports from Sopore, meanwhile, said that a group of students of the Degree College converged on road and demanded judicial inquiry into the killing of one Mohammad Ramzan Shah who had died alongwith a Pakistani militant in a military operation at Sherhama, Mawar, in Handwara area earlier this week. The students made failed attempts of taking out a protest march, while claiming that Shah was an undergraduation student of their college and not a militant, as claimed by Police and Army. Police swung into action and forced the demonstrating students to disperse.
