HM Comdr Among 3 Killed

Srinagar: A top commander of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) was among three militants killed and two arrested by the security forces in Kashmir valley where militants made abortive attempt to target patrol party of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). An official spokesman said 'A' category commander of HM Fayaz alias Zubair was killed in a police encounter at Marhama-Bijbehara in South Kashmir this evening. He said another Pak-trained militant Fayaz Ahmad, alias Jamsheed, was also arrested. Zubair, active in the south Kashmir for the past several years, was involved in several killings besides other militancy related incidents. The spokesman said that an unidentified militant was killed in an encounter with security forces at Doraswani forest in Kupwara district. Acting on a tip off, personnel of Special Operations Group assisted by Army launched a search operation in the forest area and confronted a militant, the sources said adding he was asked to surrender but he opened fire and in the ensuing gunbattle got killed. The identity and group affiliation of the deceased was being ascertained. Another unidentified militant was killed in an encounter with security forces during search operations at Kanligund-Wanidora in Doraswani forest in Kupwara district. In another operation, police arrested a Hizbul militant from Redwani-Rampora road in Kulgam district after a brief encounter this evening. Altaf Ahmad Dar alias Kachroo was asked to surrender by police but he opened fire. He was arrested after a brief encounter. A Chinese pistol, one magazine, a live round and some empty cartridges were recovered from him. The spokesman said that militants made an abortive attempt to target a security patrol with a grenade near a busy bus stand in Baramulla district this afternoon, the spokesman said, adding the ultras hurled a grenade towards a CRPF patrolling party but the grenade missed the intended target and exploded in a drain without causing any damage. However, the blast sparked off panic in the area as people ran helter skelter on hearing the big bang. Police assisted by security forces immediately cordoned off the area and a hunt has been launched to nab the militants involved in the attack. He said four masked gunmen entered the house of one Abdul Rashid Magray at Ganistan in Sumbal area of Ganderbal district, demanding Rs 50,000. However, the inmates raised hue and cry and snatched 12 bore gun from one of the gunmen. Later the gunmen fled from the spot after firing few shots in the air. No one was injured in the firing.
