HuM Comdr, LeT Ultra Killed

Srinagar: Two Pakistani militants, including a 'district commander' of Harkat- ul-Mujahideen (HuM) outfit, were killed in separate encounters in Kashmir valley where security forces foiled a plan of the militants to cause car blast and detonate a powerful IED. The HuM 'commander' Abu Shaheen Afghani, active for the last seven years, was killed in a gunfight at Krankishivan in Sopore area in Baramulla district, Senior Superintendent of Police, Baramulla, Viplav Kumar said. He said the recovery from the spot included an explosive-laden car which was to be used as a car bomb. Afghani was hiding in a house in the village and had planned major strikes, including the car bomb attack in the town on the eve of Independence Day, the SSP said, adding police, on specific information, went to the village and a gunbattle ensued in which the dreaded ultra was shot dead. He said Afghani took over as Baramulla 'district commander' following the arrest of Abu Bakr and was mainly operating in Shiva-Dangerpora area of Sopore. Meanwhile, SSP (Pulwama) Nitish Kumar said a hardcore militant of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) outfit, Rehman Saani alias Hanzulla was killed in a joint operation by Police and Army at Hiff- Khour in Zainapora area of Pulwama district. He said Hanzulla was wanted in connection with a number of attacks on politicians, including the recent attempt on the life of senior CPI-M leader and MLA Khalil Naikoo and highway blasts. Security forces foiled attempts by militants to set off blasts as they detected a powerful Improvised Explosive Device and two hand grenades at separate places. The IED, weighing 10 kilogrammes, was noticed by a joint patrolling party of the CRPF and Police near court complex in Pulwama district, a police spokesman said. He said the IED was kept inside a lunch box and placed on the roadside with the intention to trigger an explosion. The patrolling party immediately cordoned off the entire area and evacuated the people, the spokesman said, adding the explosive was later defused by the experts of bomb disposal squad. A Police and CRPF patrol also found a hand grenade in Kalwal Mohalla in Rainawari locality of downtown Srinagar, which was later defused by experts, the spokesman said. He said a live grenade was also defused by police at village Saloora in Ganderbal district. Meanwhile, Special Operations Group of Police assisted by troops of 18 Rashtriya Rifles apprehended an overground worker of Lashkar-e- Toiba outfit from Lolab area of Kupwara district today. The LeT overground worker Gafoor Khan, a resident of Mirgi village of Lolab, was arrested from his house, the spokesman said, adding two RPG rounds, 200 rounds of AK-47, two hand grenades and one wireless set were recovered from his possession.
