SPO Killed In Doda Gunbattle

Srinagar: A special police officer was killed in a gunbattle with terrorists in Doda district on Sunday, while nine people were injured in a grenade blast in Awantipura of Pulwama district. In another incident, an LeT terrorist was killed in a joint operation of Rashtriya Rifles and J&K police at Panzipora in North Kashmir's Kupwara district. The SPO, identified by the police as Baldev Singh, was killed when terrorists opened fire at security personnel in Bulandapore area of Doda district. The incident took place when the security personnel launched an offensive against terrorists who were holed up in the area, police said. Nine people were injured when terrorists threw a grenade at security forces stationed at the main chowk of Awantipura in Pulwama district. The injured were rushed to hospital, police said, adding that five people have been shifted to a Srinagar hospital. Meanwhile, security forces have been put on high alert in view of the intelligence inputs that terrorists were planning to step up violence ahead of the Independence Day. Besides foiling attempts to smuggle arms and ammunition into Srinagar from rural areas, security forces on Sunday conducted search operations at the city markets.
