Militant killed, another held

Srinagar: A Hizbul Mujahideen militant was killed by his associates while as another was arrested in Kashmir where security forces seized a huge cache of arms and explosives by busting hideouts of insurgents since last night. Throat-slit body of Hizbul militant Liaqat Ali, who was killed by his associates, was recovered from Dubjan Lhund forest in Shopian district last evening, a police spokesman said. He added that a Hizbul Mujahideen militant, Fayaz Ahmad Hajam, was arrested alongwith an AK-rifle, one magazine and 552 rounds by security forces from Sheepora in Pattan area of Baramulla district last night, he said. The spokesman said that a major tragedy was averted today when police detected an Improvised Explosive Device, weighing 15 kg, in Sopore area of Baramulla district. The IED was kept in a steel container and planted by militants on the roadside adjacent to an orchard at Shiva on Sopore-Bandipora road. It was later neutralised by the experts. A rocket was found lying at Wawoora in Lolab area of Kupwara district which was subsequently defused by the experts, frustrating militants attempt to set off an explosion, the spokesman said. In a joint operation, a defence spokesman said, Army and Police smashed a militant hideout at Bran Khudu in Kupwara district this morning. The recovery made from the hideout included a Universal Machine Gun, an AK-assault rifle, four Under Barrel Grenade Launcher, 20 electric detonators, 2.5 kg explosives, three anti-personnel mines, an Improvised Explosive Device, two IED fuses and a binocular. Troops of BSF recovered some weapons wrapped in a gunny bag and buried underground at Gugaldhar in Kupwara district, he said adding the search yielded one AK-rifle, one Chinese pistol, 14 UBGL grenades, ten hand grenades, nine detonators, one radio set, five IED timer devices and a 12-bore gun. This was the second major recovery by the troops in the Kashmir Valley during the past 24 hours. Troops of 126 Territorial Army yesterday unearthed a hideout during a search operation at Sonamarg on Srinagar-Baltal, base camp of Amarnath pilgrimage route. The arms and ammunition recovered included ten kg explosives, 20 hand grenades, eight UBGL grenades, two RPG and one pistol. Security forces arrested some persons along with Rs 1.4 lakh of fake currency at Badrana Ashmuqam in south Kashmir.
