Srinagar: A Pakistani national was among the two Al Badr militants killed by security forces in a fierce gun-battle at Wuyan in south Kashmir today, police said. Personnel of 55 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and Jammu and Kashmir Police launched a search operation following specific information that some militants were hiding at Wuyan village in Pampore area of Pulwama district this morning. As the troops were conducting searches, militants hiding in the house of Mohammad Yousuf Bhat fired upon them with automatic weapons. The fire was effectively returned. In the ensuing gunfight, two militants of the Al Badr outfit were killed, police said. The slain militants were identified as Dawood alias Tahir Shah from North West Frontier Province (NWFP) in Pakistan and Abdul Rashid alias Gani driver of Khrew Pampore, police added. Two AK-47 rifles, five magazines, 84 rounds of ammunition and two mobile phones were seized from the site of encounter. About 100 kg of explosives were recovered by security forces in Ganderbal, the second major haul within a week, a Defence spokesman said. Acting on a specific information, troops of 5 Rashtriya Rifles conducted an operation in Kaubagh near Ganderbal town last night, the spokesman said. The search party came across a cache of explosives, kept in a field and camouflaged with foliage. The recovery included 100 kg of explosives, 10 hand-grenades, some Under-barrel Grenade Launcher shells, detonators and 217 rounds of AK ammunition, he said. Earlier on May 30, security forces recovered 50 kg of explosives, three ak magazines and 30 rounds of ammunition from Bijbehara area of Anantnag district. The recovery of the explosives came close on the heels of a sudden spurt in Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attacks by militants over the past two weeks. An Army jawan was killed and 23 others were injured in three IED blasts triggered by militants at Khumriyal in Kupwara, Sopore in Baramulla and Rajbagh in Srinagar since May 26. An overground worker of Hizbul Mujahideen, Azad Ahmad Bhat, was arrested by a patrolling party of 30 RR from Handwara area of Kupwara district, the spokesman said. A resident of Shot-Gund Payeen, Bhat is the associate of a dreaded Hizbul militant Mushtaq Ahmed Malla, he said adding, two UBJL grenades have been recovered from his possession. Police also busted a militant hideout in Guzrial forests in Trehgam belt of Kupwara district, but no weapons were found there, the spokesman said.
