Srinagar: An illegal cultivation of opium poppy on about 545 hectares of land was destroyed during a week-long operation in Pulwama district. The operation was undertaken by Commissioner of Customs and Central Excise alongwith Central Bureau of Narcotics Gwalior from May 8 to May 14. During the period, the illicitly grown plants of opium poppy were destroyed and the destruction of the crop prevented 27 tonnes of opium and hundreds of tonnes of poppy straw, commonly known as Bhuki, worth crores of rupees, from finding its way in the market, an official hand-out issued here today said. It said that the destruction of these crops in this period was crucial because within a week or so the cultivators would have extracted opium by lancing the poppy pods. The security agencies in Kashmir, including State Police and Army besides Civil Administration provided active security cover during the operation, the handout added.
