Floods Killed 25, Damaged 11,290 Houses In J&K

Jammu: The floods which occurred in Jammu and Kashmir last year killed 25 persons and the state government provided relief as per the norms of the National Calamity Relief Fund. As many as 11,290 residential houses were damaged in 1,317 hamlets and 25 persons lost their lives and 35 others were injured in these floods, Minister of State for Revenue Prem Sagar Aziz said. He said Rs 50,000 was provided to the kin of the deceased, Rs 10,000 for each fully damaged house and Rs 2,000 for each partially damaged house. He said the government had taken various measures; including evacuating people from affected areas and pressing tankers into service for providing drinking water during the floods which occurred during October, 2006. Besides, the government sanctioned three months free ration at the rate of five kgs per head per month for the families in the areas which were marooned. The minister, however, claimed the Centre had not provided any amount to the state on this account.
