Islamabad: A separate department for promotion of tourism has been set up in the Northern Areas to accelerate infrastructure development for attracting maximum domestic and foreign tourists, Member Legislative Council NA, Haji Muhammad Iqbal said. Speaking in a television programme he said hefty amounts are being spent on tourism development of the so far neglected far-flung areas and each member of legislative council has been allowed to pinpoint development projects up to Rs 50 million per annum. He informed that a mountaineering school for adventure tourism would soon be established and urged the government to allow issuance of trekking permits from Skardu and Gilgit for facilitating tourists coming from China, as it is very difficult for tourists coming from China to first visit Islamabad and obtain permit for trekking.
