Islamabad: President General Pervez Musharraf Wednesday urged the EU Parliament to take a more active role in dispute resolution between Pakistan and India and hoped it would adopt a balanced and forward looking report on Kashmir. In a meeting with Elmar Brok, chairman of the Committee on Foreign Relations of the European Parliament, and James Elles, chairman of the All Party Group on Kashmir, the president also discussed the situation in Afghanistan, Pakistan-Afghanistan relations and measures his government has taken to counter extremism and militancy and for political and socio-economic development in the tribal areas. Gen Musharraf said failure is no option with regard to the Pakistan-India peace process, as failure would give a boost to extremists. He said Pakistan had made various proposals for a Kashmir solution but India had not responded positively. He added that Pakistan was willing to be flexible if India was too. Gen Musharraf said the European Parliament should facilitate resolution of the Palestine issue, which would promote peace and security in the Middle East. He stressed the importance Pakistan attaches to its relations with the European Union. Brok and Elles appreciated Pakistan s contribution to stability in the region and conveyed the interest of the European Parliament in building a closer relationship with Pakistan. Brok and Elles also met with Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, who stressed that settlement of the Kashmir dispute would enable the two countries to leverage their full economic potential to improve the lives of their people. agencies
