Al-Badr ultra killed in Mendhar

Jammu: A top militant of Al Badr outfit was gunned down by Army and police in an encounter at Sangiot in Mendhar tehsil of Poonch district this morning while Doda police arrested two persons who had been impersonating as militants and extorting money from the people. Official sources said troops of 38 Rashtriya Rifles and Mendhar police launched a search operation at Chappar Mohalla in Sangiot area of Mendhar at 4 am today after being tipped off by local people that a top Al Badr militant had taken shelter in a dhok since last night. Army and police personnel surrounded the hide-out in pitched darkness and asked the militant, who was alone in the dhok, to come out and surrender. However, the militant opened firing with his rifle and lobbed two grenades and Army and police personnel, who retaliated. In the exchange of firing for next two hours, the militant was killed. Security forces didnít suffer any casualties in the operation. Sources identified the slain militant as Abu Billal of Al Badr outfit. One AK-47 rifle, two magazines and 50 rounds were recovered from his possession, sources said. Police party in the operation was led by SHO Mendhar Inspector Brij Mohan Sharma under the supervision of Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Mendhar Yougal Manhas. SSP Poonch Shiv Darshan Singh Jamwal also visited the spot to boost morale of the police for killing a top militant. Sources said the local people played an important role in identifying hide-out of the militant and informing Army and police well in time that led to his elimination. Last month also, people had hacked to death a militant in Mendhar after two ultras had kidnapped a young girl from her house. They added that increasing co-operation of local people to Army and police had made the task of security personnel easier in identifying hide-outs of the militants and killing or apprehending them. Doda police today arrested two persons who had been impersonating as militants and extorting money from the people. Arrests were made by police from village Gangwas in Kastigarh area of Doda, SSP Doda Manohar Singh said. He identified the accused as Abdul Hamid son of Ghulam Mohd R-o Beoli Machhan, a driver by profession and Farooq Ahmed son of Abdul Kabir R-o Udianpur, Doda. A toy pistol and a toy grenade with which the impersonators had been looting money from the people were recovered from them at the time of their arrest. Police said the duo were arrested from the house of Habibullah son of Akbar Magray R-o Gangwas, Kastigarh. Arrested impersonators are being questioned to identify their other associates, they added.
