Srinagar: Kashmir's first private FM radio station - Big 92.7 -went on air here Monday. A joint venture by Mumbai-based Manmohan Shetty's Adlabs and Anil Ambani's Reliance Communications, the station has already caught the imagination of the locals.'In just a matter of hours of going on air, we received thousands of SMSs, showing a keen interest in our programmes,' said Parvaiz Mailk, an executive of the radio station here. The Ambani group came to Kashmir after its successful radio foray in Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Bangalore. The company's brand ambassador for the radio project is actor Abhishek Bachchan.'We have done enough research before starting our Kashmir operations. The local heritage, culture and high aesthetic taste for music will guide our programming here,' said another station executive. With militancy choking the state since 1989, cinema halls, video parlours, beauty parlours and wine shops were closed, leaving the locals high and dry as far as entertainment was concerned.'My dream of becoming a radio jockey (RJ) will now be fulfilled. I had passed the audition test in many places, but was looking for the right break,' said Rizwan Maqbool, 18.
