Two top HM militants, porter killed in Doda

Srinagar: In a major success, Doda police today gunned down two hardcore militants of Hizbul Mujahideen outfit including a 'divisional commander' and a porter of the outfit in an encounter at Keen Dhar in Gandoh area of Doda district. A Special Police Officer (SPO) was injured in the gunbattle. One of the slain militant was involved in looting Chanyas police post on September 8, 2006 in which two SPOs were killed and six rifles were taken away by the militants with the help of a SPO and a surrendered militant in whose house the picket was located. SSP Doda Manohar Singh said a police party from Gandoh police station launched a search operation along Keen Dhar in Gandoh last night after developing an information that a group of top Hizbul Mujahideen militant was changing the hide-out along with their arms and ammunition. A contact with the militants was established this morning after which a heavy exchange of gun- fighting ensued between the two sides that continued till this afternoon. Mr Singh said two top Hizbul militants and a porter, who was carrying weapons of the ultras, were killed in the operation. SPO Naresh Kumar was injured in the encounter. He was evacuated from the firing site and shifted to hospital where his condition was stated to be stable. Slain militants have been identified as Mushtaq Ahmed (code name Majid) son of Mohd Shafi Malik, a resident of Malikpura, Bhatyas, Gandoh and Abdul Lateef son of Ghulam Mustafa R- o Haddal. Mushtaq was 'divisional commander' of Hizbul Mujahideen while Latief was 'section commander' of the outfit. A porter, who was carrying arms and ammunition of the militants and was killed in the operation, has been identified as Mohd Issaq son of Mehar Din Gujjar R-o Malat Chilly, Gandoh. Recoveries made from the slain militants include two AK rifles, two magazines, two pouches and 11 AK rounds. Mushtaq Ahmed was an active militant of Hizbul Mujahideen since 1992. He was instrumental in last month's attack on Chanyas police post in Doda district in which two SPOs were killed and six weapons were looted by the militants with the help of a SPO and a surrendered militant. Besides, Mushtaq and Abdul Latief, who was an active militant since 2003, were wanted in a series of militant activities across Doda district. A day before, Doda police and security forces had killed two two Hizbul Mujahideen militants in Gandoh. Army and SOG Surankote destroyed a hide-out of the militants at Bafliaz in Surankote tehsil of Poonch district today and recovered one Chinese pistol with two magazines and 15 rounds, 99 AK rounds, one UBGL grenades, two IEDs, two night vision devices, one Pika ammunition box, two wireless set antennas and one pouch.
