4 militants killed in Kashmir

Srinagar: Army troops today foiled an infiltration bid by gunning down four militants near the Line of Control in Kupwara district, a defence spokesman said here. Troops guarding the LoC noticed a group of intruders at Sona Pindi area in Machil sector of Kupwara, the spokesman said adding, when the security personnel confronted them, they opened fire. In the ensuing encounter, four militants were killed, the spokesman said adding, the search of the area is still on. Meanwhile, Army apprehended a militant and seized two hand grenades during a search operation at Chek-e-Raithan in central Kashmir district of Badgam today. Police also arrested an extortionist at Qazibagh in south Kashmir's Anantnag district today. He intruded into the house of Muneer Ahmad Shawl and demanded money. Meanwhile, a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel committed suicide in south Kashmir's Anantnag district today, official sources said. Ajit Kumar Naik was attached with E company of the CRPF's 157 Battalion and posted at Dyalagam village in Anantnag district. The sources said Naik returned to the CRPF camp after area domination duty this afternoon and began talking to his family members over mobile phone. After some time, Naik took out his service weapon and shot himself on head, they said, adding the jawan died on the spot. The sources said the reasons for taking this extreme step were not immediately known.
