Cop dies, another wounded in Kashmir shooting

Srinagar: Separatist guerrillas struck yet again in the heart of Jammu and Kashmir summer capital Srinagar Sunday killing one policeman and critically injuring another. Police said guerrillas fired at a point blank range at two policemen in Lal Chowk, the city centre where hundreds of shoppers were busy making their Eid festival purchases.'We shifted the two injured policemen to the SMHS hospital for treatment. One critically injured cop, identified as Mehraj-ud- Din, succumbed to his injuries while the condition of another is very critical,' said Anand Jain, the area superintendent of police.'Militants fired from a close range at the two and soon escaped from the spot,' he added.The shootout triggered panic in the area as shopkeepers pulled down their shutters and traffic diverted. 'I saw the two cops lying on the road in a pool of blood. It happened in a matter of seconds. Sound of pistol fire and when I looked around the two policemen were profusely bleeding,' said Manzoor, a bystander.Police and paramilitary troops surrounded the area immediately and mounted massive searches. 'We are conducting searches in the adjoining locality and the lanes and by-lanes,' Jain told IANS here.No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
