80pc in N. Areas to get power supply by 2007

Islamabad: The government will provide electricity to 80 percent population of the Northern Areas till the end of 2007. This was stated by Minister for Kashmir Affairs Tahir Iqbal in a briefing to Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on the performance of his ministry on Saturday. Mr Iqbal said there had been a quantum increase in literacy rate in the Northern Areas. He said income tax collection target of Rs2,500 million for AJK Council was surpassed. The target of provincial taxes fixed by the AJK government amounting to Rs694 million was also surpassed to Rs791.148 million. He said his ministry was making all-out efforts to provide facilities to the tourists so that the vast potential in tourism sector could be fully utilised. He said a feasibility report to preserve and pack the locally produced fruit was in process. The government was concentrating on mineral development to provide job opportunities to the people of Northern Areas. The prime minister said the government was focusing on development of tourism, handicrafts, value-addition in the agri sector; horticulture and hydel power generation for the development of Northern Areas. He said the government was focusing on income generation programmes, better facilities of health and education, improvement in law and order situation and for the overall uplift of the area.
