Militant killed; soldier dies at hospital

Srinagar: While one unidentified militant has died in an encounter with security forces in Handwara area, a CRPF constable has succumbed to injuries at hospital. Informed sources said that one unidentified militant got killed in an encounter with troops of Rashtriya Rifles 06 Bn at Chak Nowgam in Handwara area. Sources said that Constable Akhlesh Kumar, who had sustained critical injuries in a militant attack in Koker Bazar here yesterday, has breathed his last at Army hospital. His body was being dispatched to Itawa, UP, for funeral in his home village. Sources said that late last night, troops of RR 62 Bn observed a human movement near Chak Cholan in Shopian area of south Kashmir. As the command of halt came from troops, militants opened fire and managed to escape. One person, namely Abdur Rasheed Mir S-o Abdur Rehman Mir of the same village was arrested in injured condition as he had sustained a gunshot wound. He was taken into custody, rushed to Srinagar and admitted to Bone & Joint Hospital. Officials said that Mir was an overground worker of Lashkar-e-Toiba who was wanted in several cases. Police and forces had raided his residence a number of times but failed to arrest him. They said that Mir, who was stable at the hospital, revealed that he was guiding a Lashkar group to a nearby village when he and his militants got trapped in an ambush. They said that two live grenades were recovered from Mir's possession.
