Srinagar: A senior correspondent for a national daily in Jammu and Kashmir said on Sunday that unidentified gunmen had tried to kill him after abducting him at gunpoint. Shujaat Bukhari, a journalist for India’s The Hindu newspaper, said that he had been abducted by two gunmen from Srinagar in a taxi on Friday evening. “They pushed me out of the taxi and one of the gunmen tried to shoot at me but his pistol got locked,” Bukhari told reporters. “They got panicky and fled from the area and I also immediately rushed back to my home,” he said. Politicians and journalists have condemned the attack on Bukhari. “It is an attack on the freedom of the press,” the region’s top female politician Mehbooba Mufti said in a statement.
