Srinagar: Militants shot dead a municipal councillor, Mohammad Afzal Dar, at Sopore, in north Kashmir's Baramulla district, on Sunday. Sources said the assailants waylaid Dar at the Krankshawan colony in Sopore at 5.30 pm and pumped about half a dozen bullets into Dar, killing the councillor on the spot. The shootout took place just hours after the PDP announced its candidates for the by-elections to three assembly segments - Pattan, Sangrama and Rafiabad. Insurgents are opposed to elections in the state and have called for a boycott.
