Top HM Militant Killed

Srinagar: A top Hizb militant, wanted in many militancy related incidents and active for the last 15 years in south Kashmir was killed in a fierce gun battle today, while as suspected militants killed a civilian in Awantipora today. Militants also opened fire at PDP activist's house in Ganderbal without causing any damages.According to sources, troopers of 7 Rashtriya Rifles after receiving a tip off laid a cordon in Sangam village of Khundroo in Achabal area of Anantnag in south Kashmir. Sources said that the troopers launched house to house search in the village to flush out the militants hiding there. Sources said that the militants hiding there attempted to break the cordon and sneak away. Despite offering to surrender and lay down the arms, the militants opened heavy fire on the troops, which was returned ensuing into fierce gun battle, the sources said. A top Hizbul Mujahideen militant, identified as Shareef-ud-Din Khan alias Zaffar of Utroosu Tral was killed in the exchange of fire sources added. An AK rifle and some ammunition were recovered from his possession. The slain militant, as per the sources, was wanted in various militant activities and killing and was also active in south Kashmir for the last fifteen years. The search operation in the village was still continuing. Sources held the killing of Zaffar as the major setback to Hizb and equally major breakthrough for counter insurgency forces in Kashmir. In further violence in the Valley, unidentified gunmen, suspected to be militants, abducted one Muzaffar Ahmed Sofi from his residence in Awantipora in south Kashmir and later shot him dead in a nearby village, the sources said. Police recovered his body from Baragam village in Awantipora. Sofi was running an audio cassettes shop in Awantipora and earlier used to drive an auto rickshaw. Reasons for killing him were not established. In the meantime an injured, who had received splinters in his body during a grenade attack on PDP rally in Tangmarg on November 15 succumbed today in SKIMS Hospital. Identified as Mohammed Ramzan Magray, the slain person was undergoing treatment in SKIMS for nearly about seven weeks before he succumbed today. Militants, today, opened fire on the house of a PDP activist in Ganderbal which was returned by his guards, however no reports of injuries or causalities were received. Unidentified gunmen abducted a civilian Bashir Ahmed Bhat of Meeripora Pahalgam from his residence today. Police has registered a missing report while as no whereabouts were traced of Bashir. Meanwhile, two Army personnel were shot dead by their senior colleague inside a camp in Pulwama district today. Lance Naik Abdesh Kumar of 55 Rashtriya Rifles shot dead Sepoys Gurmail Singh and Kukander Singh after a heated argument over some issue inside their camp at Kakapora village, the sources said. Quoting the FIR lodged by the Unit in the local police station today, the sources said Kumar used his service rifle to kill his colleagues and was overpowered soon after and taken into custody. However, the reason behind the scuffle between the jawans was not known immediately, the sources said.
