Srinagar: Four persons, including two militants, a Special Police Officer (SPO) and a civilian, were killed in incidents of violence across Kashmir since Tuesday evening. Also, a major tragedy was averted in Srinagar this afternoon when an IED was defused in a busy market. Defense spokesman in Srinagar said two militants were killed in a gunbattle in the Rayal Kokernag forests in South Kashmir's Anatnag district today. He said that after a tip-off last night, troops of 36 Rashtriya Rifles cordoned the area and started search operation. The encounter started this morning and ended when the two militants were killed by soldiers, said the spokesman. The slain militants were associated with Harket-i-Jehadi Islami and have been identified as Mohd Amin alias Qamran of Chatroo Kistwar and Ghulam Hassen of Gudool Anatang. Two AK 47 rifles and 150 round nine hand grenades were recovered from the place of encounter. Police sources said that the body of an SPO, Sareer Ahmad, was recovered from Malangam village of Bandipora in Baramulla district this morning. The SPO was abducted by unidentified gunmen on Tuesday evening. They later hanged him. The police suspect militants to be behind this killing. In another incident, militants tossed a grenade towards a security force vehicle in Khoima Kulgam in South Kashmir. The grenade, however, missed the intended target and exploded on the roadside killing a civilian. The deceased is yet to be identified, the police said. Meanwhile, a major tragedy was averted in the summer capital when security forces detected an improvised explosive device (IED) at the busy Jhelum market, Batmaloo. Sources said that the IED was planted in a handcart. Traffic was closed for almost two hours on the road while the IED was diffused.
