Kargil Victory Celebrated At Drass

Udhampur: Operation Vijay celebrations were carried out by the Mountain Division at Drass today as it was on this day that Indian Army has achieved total success during Kargil Operation, when Kargil, Drass, Tiger Hill, Tololing, Capt Batra, all became household names. Those who took part in the function included Lt Gen Hari Prasad, GOC-in-C Northern Command alongwith his wife Mrs Lakshami Hari Prasad, Lt Gen Mohinder Puri, presently Deputy Chief of the Army Staff, who was GOC Mountain Division during the war, Lt Gen M L Naidu, GOC Leh Corps, Mrs M L Naidu, president AWWA Leh Corps, Maj Gen V K Ahluwalia, GOC, Mountain Division besides veterans of the war. The civil administration was represented by Asgar Ali Karbalai, Chief Executive Councillor, LAHDC Kargil and various other high ranking civil and police dignitaries. Functions commenced with a solemn wreath laying ceremony at the Bimbat War memorial against the back- drop of the now famous Tiger Hill and Tololing, where the Indian Army had fought inch by inch and often hand to hand to throw out the enemy. This was followed by a Sainik Sammelan. Lt Gen Hari Prasad addressing the gathering remembered the tremendous sacrifices made by brave soldiers in protecting the integrity of the nation and making every Indian proud. He also praised the locals and the civil administration of the area who had rendered whole hearted support to the Army. Later the Army's Padam-Manali trekking expedition under Maj Chauhan was flagged in. This was followed by Barakhana, Band display and a solemn ceremony at the war memorial in the night when candles were lit in memory of all those who paid down their lives during the battle.
