PM Visits Snow-hit J&K

Srinagar: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday made an aerial survey of avalanche-devastated areas in Anantnag district and assured the Jammu and Kashmir government all help in dealing with the natural calamity. The Prime Minister was accompanied by Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil, Jammu and Kashmir Governor Lt Gen (Retd) SK Sinha and Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, official sources said. The Prime Minister made the aerial survey of Waltingunar, which alone accounted for 160 deaths, Nigarnar and Nailoo areas, they said. Earlier, soon after his arrival in the valley, the Prime Minister was briefed about relief and rescue operations mounted by security forces and the administration in snow-battered areas. Assuring the state government of all help in dealing with the situation, Singh expressed grief at the huge loss of life in the natural calamity. Over 200 people had perished in unprecedented snowfall, avalanches and blizzards in the state. The sources said a central team would soon visit the avalanche-hit areas to assess the damage. People's Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti, who called on Singh on Saturday in New Delhi, also accompanied the Prime Minister from the national capital.
