Srinagar: Opposition National Conference today gained control of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation, bagging 41 of the 68 seats in the civic body polls. Significantly, the party's clean sweep in civic body polls here followed its rout across North Kashmir. The ruling Pepole's Democratic Party (PDP) was left far behind with only 17 seats, while its alliance partner Congress got just six seats. Independents, who had a good outing in the first phase of civic body polls last month, also fared poorly with just four seats to show. The today's results came as a major boost to National Conference as these signify its revival. 'We have won the civic polls despite malpractices by the ruling PDP and its partners,' said senior National Conference leader and former minister, Ali Mohammad Sagar. The NC candidates have been declared elected from most of the wards in urban areas of Srinagar especially the downtown city, which witnessed very low polling percentage yesterday. The NC's victory in Srinagar Municipal Corporation polls is deemed to level the power balance, as Mufti government especially the police and civil adminstration in state's summer capital will be accountable to the civic body run by NC, thus bring transparency and accountability. Earlier, during the day, the supporters of various political parties mostly from National Conference were eagerly waiting for the declaration of results at the ounting centres. 'I am here to support my party - National Conference,' said a teenager outside the National Institute of Technology (NIT), where one of the counting centre was established. 'We are sure that today NC will achieve the success.' As the first result was announced in favour of National Conference, its supporters outside burst crackers and raised slogans in favour of the party. It is a lesson for the Peoples Democratic Party. People here want a change in power, said an NC supporter.
