Islamabad: The sub-committee of the parliamentary committee on Kashmir rejected on Thursday the proposal of making the Line of Control (LoC) an interim or permanent solution to the Kashmir issue. The sub- committee meeting, held at the Parliament House here, was presided over by leader of the house in Senate Wasim Sajjad. The meeting emphasized that the LoC was not acceptable as the interim or final solution either to Pakistan or to the people of Kashmir. The committee called upon the United Nations to implement its resolutions regarding the holding of plebiscite in the State of Jammu and Kashmir, as the right of self-determination was the fundamental right of Kashmiris which was exercised by some other nations recently. If the basic right of self-determination was denied to the people of Kashmir it could lead to a potential nuclear flash point, the committee observed. The committee was of the consensus opinion that in order to resolve the Kashmir issue, India must fulfil its commitment to holding of plebiscite in occupied Kashmir. The meeting observed with concern that there were serious violations of human rights by the Indian security forces deployed in the valley which needed to be highlighted. The meeting was attended, among others, by Prof Khurshid Ahmed, Prof Saeed Siddiqui, Mushtaq Victor and Chaudhry Imranullah advocate, MNAs and officials concerned. Talking to Dawn, Prof Khurshid Ahmed said the committee finalized its report for submission to the special parliamentary committee on Kashmir. The report, he said, would help prepare a strategy on the Kashmir issue. It is recommended that only such people should be selected for projecting the issue on international forums who have full background knowledge on the matter and were fully committed to the cause. He said he had also submitted his own working paper at the meeting which was approved as part of the report.
