Northern Areas Legislative Council to be elevated as Assembly

Gilgit: Northern Areas Legislative Council is expected to elevate to the status of Assembly. The decision to this effect will be announced by President General Pervez Musharraf during his three day visit to Gilgit. Sources told NNI that President will inaugurate Dry Port in Sust. He will also address a public meeting there in which he will announce to upgrade the Northern Areas Legislative Council to the status of Assembly. Besides increasing the Members of the Assembly up to 32, he will also enhance the seats of Women in District, Local and Union Councils. The President will also announce to give financial powers to the Chief Secretary of Northern Areas. Three new districts comprising the areas of Astoon, Hunza, Nagar and Gultari will be formed and expansion of Gilgit-Skardu road will be made in the light of the decision of Supreme Court. The President will also announce a comprehensive development special package of five billion rupees in 2004-05 budget. The reforms in Northern Areas will help alleviate the sufferings of the people of Northern Areas.
